Residential Geothermal Systems

Residential Geothermal Systems

A geothermal heating and cooling system is a great investment for homeowners in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, North Liberty Coralville and Anamosa metropolitan area. Residential geothermal systems use technology known as ground source heat pumps to make the transfer of hot and cool air more efficient. A geothermal system is the single most efficient way to heat and cool a residential space. Residential geothermal systems remove heat from the space and rejects it into the ground during the cooling periods and then pulls heat out of the ground and puts it back into the space during the heating periods.

Geothermal systems are extremely efficient because they are able to work with a consistent ground temperature as opposed to a conventional air source heat pump, or air conditioner that is trying to work against outside temperatures that often vary greatly from the desired comfort level inside.

They gave me several options for my heating and cooling needs and didn’t rush me for a decision. When it came time to install they were helpful with financing, were prompt and fast. I barely knew they were there! The furnace works beautifully, and my bills are quite manageable. Thanks!

How Exactly Does Geothermal Work?

During the cooling period, heat is absorbed into the refrigerant. That heat is then transferred from the refrigerant through a heat exchanger into the water. The water is then pumped through a series of pipes through the ground using a loop water circulator pump and the heat is absorbed into the ground. After the ground absorbs heat from the water, the cooler water is returned to the house ready to absorb more heat.

Why Residential Geothermal is a Good Investment for Your Home

Substantial Savings on Energy Costs. Typically, residential homeowners can save from 50% to 70% on the cost of heating and cooling versus a conventional system.

Protection from Rising Energy Costs. We all know the price of electricity, natural gas, and propane will continue an upward trend for the foreseeable future. Owning a geothermal system substantially reduces the impact of this trend on the family budget.

Long Product Life. Conventional heating and cooling systems have a typical lifespan of twelve to fifteen years. Geothermal equipment will last up to twenty-five years before needing replacement. The ground loop can be expected to last in excess of fifty years.

Savings on Maintenance. Because there is no outside unit with a geothermal system, maintenance costs are 30% to 50% less than for conventional equipment.

Geothermal Return on Investment. Geothermal manufacturers typically tout a simple payback of around 5 years for a geothermal system.
