Residential Air Purifiers

Residential Air Purifiers

Here at Affordable Heating and Cooling, we know that keeping the indoor air clean in your Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, North Liberty, Coralville, and Anamosa area home is a major concern. Particularly with the advent of year-round home comfort systems for providing constant indoor temperature control, our houses are sealed up tighter than ever. This is good news in many ways because it keeps out cold air in the winter, hot air in the summer and all manner of outdoor air pollutants.

However, having such a tightly sealed up house also means that the air you have inside is staying inside. In that air, there can actually be a lot of contaminants like allergens, gasses, viruses and bacteria. Depending on your particular sensitivity level to these allergens and other contaminants, you’ll be better off with some type of air purifier.

They were very quick to give a bid and start on install once I decided on their dealership. Their salesman and their techs were great. They also were very helpful in getting an efficiency rebate from my electric company.

Residential Air Purifiers

Targeting the Right Contaminants with a Residential Air Purifier

Not every residential air purifier is created equal. Various models use different methods for removing contaminants, and each of these is typically more effective at removing certain types of particles than others.

For instance, air purifiers that use mechanical filtration, like HEPA filters, are extremely effective at removing particles that measure 0.3 microns or larger. This typically means they’re good at catching things like  pet dander, dust mold spores, and pollen. However, they’re typically not as effective when it comes to removing smaller particles such as those that make up harmful gasses and that cause smoke odors to linger.

For efficient removal of these smaller particles, ionizer type air purifiers are the more effective choice. This type of indoor air purification system works by ionizing the air that passes through it. This, in turn causes the contaminant particles to be separated from the rest of the air.

While they are very effective against smaller particles, ionizers often miss larger particles that may settle out of the air before they can be collected by the device. They also produce a small amount of ozone gas which should not be harmful in such small amounts but can exacerbate some asthma and allergy symptoms.

Combining Air Purifiers and Air Cleaners

In truth, the best indoor air quality systems make use of a combination of these technologies to get the job done. By utilizing both ionization, which targets smaller particles and filtration, to catch the larger ones, a combination air purifier can provide a total solution for improving your home indoor air quality. You can even have one of these installed as part of a complete home heating and cooling system to provide your home with an integrated solution for comfort and climate control.
